About Tom

Tom Clempson’s funny face

A very long time ago…

Tom was born as a fully qualified baby, in a tiny village in Oxfordshire, England, where he attended a weirdly old-fashioned primary school that was attached to his house and was stuck in a time warp which meant it was always partially 1949. Tom 98% does not believe in ghosts, but this school was 99.2% definitely haunted. Tom pretended to get older and went to a secondary school in Warwickshire, where there was no uniform, pupils called the teachers by their first names, and lots of people wanted to hurt him. This school was the inspiration for his first novel ‘One Seriously Messed-Up Week in the Otherwise Mundane and Uneventful Life of Jack Samsonite’.

Tom pretended to get older again. He went to film school and learned to write films that never got made into films, and lo, Tom invented books.

Fake older again. Tom did jobs. Toilet cleaner, waiter, artist, cameraman, optician, marketing, then worked in Film and TV. Bob the Builder, The Corpse Bride, Fantastic Mr Fox, Frankenweenie… Then something terrible happened – Tom’s hair genuinely got older, and some of it even died.

Now…

Tom lives in Cheshire, England, with his wife and four children, and he almost never draws on their faces while they sleep. As well as writing his own books he edits and ghostwrites for other authors, but he actually spends most of his time… (please prepare for shocking twist ending)… just driving his kids around. The end.
